Zettelkasten Method

Overview

The Zettelkasten Method is a personal knowledge management system developed by German sociologist Niklas Luhmann. It's designed to enhance learning, creativity, and productivity through the creation and connection of Atomic Notes.

Core Principles

  1. Atomicity: Each note contains one main idea (Atomic Notes)
  2. Autonomy: Notes should be self-contained and understandable on their own
  3. Linking: Connect notes to create a network of ideas
  4. Emergence: New insights arise from the connections between notes

An illustrative keyword index points to card 12/1. A branch card 12/1a extends it between 12/1 and 12/2. A cross-reference reaches card 7/3 in another sequence. Stable addresses allow both ordered neighbors and links to distant ideas.
The archive’s numbering, keyword index and internal links supported different kinds of access. This original conceptual example uses invented identifiers to explain those mechanisms.
