Rate of Perceived Exertion

Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is a subjective scale used to measure the intensity of physical activity. It helps individuals gauge their effort level during Exercise and adjust intensity appropriately.

The Scale

A subjective 0-to-10 effort scale highlights 5–6 as moderate and 7–8 as vigorous. Moderate activity permits talking but not singing; vigorous activity allows only a few words before pausing for breath.
CDC's relative-effort guide uses 0–10, with moderate effort at 5–6 and vigorous effort at 7–8. The talk test adds a practical check. This conceptual scale is subjective and does not convert directly into heart rate or calorie expenditure. Original conceptual diagram based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, What Counts as Physical Activity for Older Adults.
